Endemic plants

From Mgias

85% of the 12,000 plant species are also indigenous to Madagascar. 75% of these are used in herbal medicine and pharmacology. The vegetation types and plant species vary from region to region.

This astonishing biodiversity with very high level of endemism is the result of Madagascar’s prolonged isolation from the African mainland following the break-up of Gondwanaland around 165 million years ago. Native species have evolved on their own on a micro-continent with different climatic zones.
